B.Sc. Perfusion Technology
Affiliated to Kerala University of Health Sciences (KUHS)
Perfusion Technology is a specialized allied health science program that prepares students to become skilled clinical perfusionists, integral members of the cardiac surgical team. The course provides in-depth knowledge and hands-on training in operating the cardiopulmonary bypass (heart-lung) machine and other advanced life-support systems used during open-heart and thoracic surgeries.
Students are trained to manage extracorporeal circulation, maintain hemodynamic stability, and ensure adequate oxygenation and perfusion to vital organs while the heart is temporarily non-functional during surgery.
Medium of Instruction: English
Key Program Outcomes: Graduates will master cardiopulmonary bypass management, expert operation of heart-lung machines and oxygenators, circulatory and respiratory support during surgery, advanced life support systems including ECMO and ventricular assist devices, clinical monitoring of anticoagulation and blood-gas composition, transplant support procedures, autologous blood management, and patient-specific care planning for cardiac procedures.
Curriculum: The program covers foundational subjects including Human Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Pathology, Microbiology, Applied Pharmacology, and specialized perfusion technology courses covering clinical, applied, and advanced perfusion techniques with extensive hands-on training in cardiac surgery environments.
Training Approach: Comprehensive learning through lecture classes for theoretical foundation, practical classes for hands-on equipment training, clinical postings in hospitals (Fridays and Saturdays), specialized laboratory work, and one-year intensive internship with rotations in KUHS-approved healthcare facilities providing real surgical environment experience.
Career Opportunities: Cardiac perfusionist in hospitals and cardiac surgery centers, ECMO specialist in intensive care units, transplant team member, medical equipment specialist for perfusion technology companies, clinical educator, research specialist in cardiovascular technology, quality assurance officer, and consultant for healthcare institutions developing perfusion services.
