Bachelor of Occupational Therapy

The Bachelor of Occupational Therapy is a comprehensive 4.5-year undergraduate program affiliated to Kerala University of Health Sciences (KUHS), designed to develop skilled occupational therapy professionals who assess, treat, and rehabilitate individuals with physical, mental, developmental, or emotional disabilities to help them achieve maximum independence in daily living and work environments.

 

Medium of Instruction: English  


Key Program Outcomes: Graduates will master assessment and clinical reasoning skills, advanced therapeutic interventions, professional ethics, health monitoring capabilities, community-based rehabilitation, ergonomic applications, early intervention programs, intensive care competency, biomechanical expertise for orthotic design, disability evaluation, research and evidence-based practice, leadership skills, and multidisciplinary collaboration.


Curriculum: The program covers foundational subjects including Anatomy, Physiology, Psychology, Sociology, Pathology, Biochemistry, Pharmacology, and specialized occupational therapy courses in Psychiatry, Paediatrics, Neurology, Orthopaedics, Rehabilitation Medicine, Community Medicine, Research Methodology, and Healthcare Administration across four academic years with extensive clinical placements.


Training Approach: Progressive learning through classroom lectures, practical and laboratory demonstrations, bedside clinics, self-directed academic activities, and clinical postings in hospitals and community health agencies. Additional activities include library hours, seminars, case discussions, guest lectures, and physical education totalling comprehensive professional development.


Career Opportunities: Clinical occupational therapy in hospitals and rehabilitation centres, community-based rehabilitation programs, paediatric and developmental disabilities services, mental health and psychiatric rehabilitation, industrial and workplace ergonomics, research and academic positions, private practice, consultancy services, and healthcare administration roles.

 

Eligibility Criteria

Candidates who have passed Higher Secondary Examination of the Board of Higher Secondary Education or equivalent, having minimum 80% marks.

Selection of Students

The selection of students for the Bachelor of Occupational Therapy course is strictly on merit basis as decided by the competent authority approved by the Government of Kerala/Kerala University of Health Sciences.

Registration

A candidate on admission to the Occupational Therapy course shall apply to the university for registration

  • By making a formal application in the prescribed format.
  • Original Plus Two certificate and mark list of the qualifying examination.
  • Allotment letter from the competent authority.
  • Eligibility and migration certificate wherever needed
  • Original SSLC/equivalent certificate.
  • The fees prescribed for the course.

4.5 years (4 years coursework + 6 months compulsory rotating internship)
